88 HOA Board Member Application

Background/Commitment

I am ready for take-off and want to be your community advocate!

I have been an owner and full-time resident since 2011, and care deeply for our community both fiscally and socially. I believe that owners should come first. I am a huge advocate for transparency, accountability, and open communication with the owners.

Being active on Buildinglink and our 88-chat group (not to mention the personal chats on the elevator, in the gym, and while I am getting my steps in walking around the garage), has kept me in touch with residents. I enjoy providing information and resources to help out my neighbors at the 88!

I stay current with HOA rules and regulations, state laws, etc. to offer thoughtful well-informed comments at meetings. My recent retirement allows me the time to fully commit to a position on the board. I will embrace this responsibility with dedication and an open-door policy to connect with owners. Input on my performance is welcome, and I expect to be held accountable.

I have worked with the Social Committee in the past and continue to bring community gatherings and musicians to the 88. I have attended almost every board meeting since 2011 and often ask questions or give input. I have done research on HOA boards for years. I am also a board member for the San Jose Retired Employees Association.

My job experiences have equipped me with skills in leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, budget management, RFP/Vendor administration, conflict resolution, team leadership, and community engagement, all of which I plan to bring to the 88 board.

I'm an independent thinker who will stand up for the best interests of our community. I will continue to speak up at HOA meetings and ask the tough questions to create transparency that best serves our community. (All residents have the right to know what is going on in their community.) It is important as a board member to have your own thoughts, views, etc. and to express them in order to make the best decision for the community. I think it is possible to have different points of view while still respecting other board members. I will be very much committed to having board members and management respect each other’s ideas & differences.

See below for goals, work experiences, and references.

Goals

* Keeping HOA fees as low as possible. Present solutions to improve operations and save money.

* Keeping our building safe and well maintained. We need to stay on top of building issues to keep the residents safe.

* Create/launch committees (finance, social, landscape, safety/maintenance, marketing/communications, etc.) Get resident's input.

* Clear and transparent communication. Advance notice to residents for meetings, follow up with minutes. Community newsletter.

* Confidential surveys to keep a report card on community thoughts in order to make positive changes. Strict confidentiality for honest feedback.

* Provide better information flow for our offsite owners

* Ensure respect amongst community members, staff, board members, and management. Mutual professional respect at board meetings.

* Enhanced communication with management and residents is important. We need to keep residents informed when staff leave. Many of them feel like our family.  Renters in the building should also be respected and feel like part of this amazing community.

Anything else to add?

I have lived in San Jose for over 30 years and graduated from San Jose State University. I love to laugh, bring joy to others, and to assist people. Having a connected and caring community is important to me. I work well on diverse teams and excellent at problem solving.

There are two board seats open. I hope you can take just a few minutes to vote this week (or by April 4th to make sure your vote will count.)  I would love for you to trust me to serve the community. Many 88 elections have been won or lost by one vote. So, your vote really does matter! Please email me for any questions at cathylifebydesign@yahoo.com or we can also set up a time to talk if you prefer. I will see you at the HOA board election meeting on April 17 at 6pm.

Work Testimonials

Grant Lee- Human Resources Director at Valley Water

Cathy is a consummate "people" person and can connect and coach staff at all levels. She is highly experienced in developing and delivery training and development solutions, at leading and motivating staff, and helps staff understand how to "be their best".

Upon joining the Water District, Cathy took on the development of the District's Leadership Program and other high profile and significant programs. In addition to her technical competence in the field of Learning and Development, Cathy has a vibrant personality that promotes positiveness and is a joy to work with!

Eileen Beaudry- Direct Supervisor for Cathy at the City of San Jose

Cathy is a dynamic trainer with skills/knowledge in curriculum development, training delivery, meeting and retreat facilitation, conflict resolution, mentoring program implementation, employee supervisor coaching, recognition programs, and onboarding of interns.

Cathy received not one but two All Employee Recognition Awards given annually by the City Mayor; one for the Citywide Mentoring Program that she developed and implemented and another for the Citywide Recognition Program that she also developed and implemented with a team of employees from numerous departments. What makes her stand out is her high energy and enthusiasm, her emotional intelligence and ability to connect with employees, and her creative thinking. I would highly recommend her as a supervisor coach, a facilitator, a training program creator, a conflict mediator, and for all things Workforce Development.

Kevin McKay- Direct report to Cathy at Valley Water

Cathy has been an active reason I continue to enjoy working at Valley Water.
There is no air of ego or pretension from her, she genuinely likes doing her job and wants to be as supportive as she can be. And I’ve found that a terrific boon in a direct manager.

Boon Yang- Direct report to Cathy at Valley Water

Cathy is a fun, caring, flexible, and adaptable supervisor. She has the magic to tap into your potential and strives to get the best out of you. She is an excellent communicator and team builder who not only has high expectations of others but also herself.
